ARTIST STATEMENT

S. Apollo Fisher (He/Any) is a San Francisco-based, contemporary figure painter, pursuing a B.A. in Studio Arts at San Francisco State University, with a Minor in Business Marketing.

His work surrounds the complexities of his identity as a Trans, Queer Mexicano, as well as grief and love. Using the iconography of cacti, he takes the tangible ideas of thorns and flowers to demonstrate the disconnect, confusion, and imposter syndrome of living. How the intersectionality of his queerness and culture converse, and the immense loss experienced within their life changed the way they think.

Fisher plays with surrealistic existence, gender-androgynous figures, and warm desert colors to communicate their fears and joys, the idea of hiding in plain sight, holding on to something knowing it will only hurt, and craving familiarity. He accentuates figures' skin texture, scarring, stretch marks, and other “ugly” features to push boundaries and ridged beauty norms. To discuss how grief of all types: past, present, future, continuous, and haunting, are all to be held with love and care.
